It's in our blood

Here we are—the day before my birthday—about to enjoy what turned out to be our last shopping trip together at "our favorite department store." (See upper left corner for location.) And shoot fire, we sure got us some deals.

How lucky to have a picture of your last shopping trip together!!!

I was on a business trip and shopping at the local Mall on my time off when I decided to stop for a treat at Cinnibon. I started to uncontrollably cry after I took my first bite. The last shopping trip my g-ma and I took before she passed included a treat at Cinnibon that we shared. I had forgotten that until I took that fateful bite. I wish I had a picture of us like you do.

I've missed you, glad you're back!

Hi, peef! Isn't it interesting what little things can bring people back to us? That's a bittersweet story you just told, and I wish too that you had a "last" photo of you and your gran. I have one with my mom like that too, our last outing together. These small captures mean a lot. It's funny, too, because on this trip to D.I. I thought to myself, "I'd better get a shot of us. What if this turns out to be my last opportunity?" Glad I listened.

Thanks for missing me! It's good to be back, and I have a lot of catching up with people and their blogs to do (this includes you!), since way before I left for NC.

So sweet, I love that- it looks like it was a beautiful day!

Taking more photos this year might have turned out to be a bigger blessing than you initially thought?! I bet a lot more memories were recorded that way with your camera joining you more often for 2007!

My gran live far away, but I will probably always remember her clutching my arm as we made our way through crowds to see a Broadway Show when she came to visit me in NY! The photo and the moment will be in my mind forever, even once she passes. Glad to think about that this evening.

liz: You are so right about the photos. The big stinking bummer is that I had an accident with my camera while at the beach a couple days after the funeral, and it's ruined beyond repair, so now I'm shotless for a while. (But I didn't lose my photos from the funeral trip.)

I love your sweet granny memory. What a delight that must have been for you to go out on the town with your Grande Dame!

ash: Thanks. I am doing okay. The crisis coping, which I happen to have some kind of talent for, is over now, and the sad reality is beginning to set in that this nine-year "project" of up-close loving and caretaking is done. I thought I'd done a lot of my grieving along the way, and maybe I had, but I can tell there's still a lot to be done. Luckily, I know that grief won't kill me. It's just time to work through it again.

melody: Too bad I didn't get an "action shot." Turning Gram loose in D.I. and watching her go was one of the great pleasures of my last almost-a-decade.

Your grandmother is so sweet. I think it is so great that she has been such a huge part of your life. That is very lucky indeed. You all will be in my prayers.

Thanks, Christa. We miss her!

Like I said in my last comment, I don't know you, but I do know what it's like to absolutely adore your grandmother. I have one remaning (the one I've always been very close to,) and I can't imagine the void her passing will leave in my life. This picture of the two of you is so sweet. And I'm particularly fond because I LOVE thrifting. Just wanted you to know I'm thinking of you and hoping that life is surrounding you with much to love and smile about.

Glowing with DI anticipation! You and your gran and my mom have been much on my mind lately. I'll put a face on it with this beauty of a photo...

emily: Thanks for that lovely note. I'd like to meet you! If you're ever in my neck of the woods, look me up and I'll take you with me to thrift store Mecca.

elizabeth: With The Ancestor, there were two standard "beauty" lessons—one was "Look perty," and the other was "Don't act ugly." Can you understand the difference? Outer and inner. I have to work at them both.

Whenever somebody calls me gorgeous nowadays (and, oh yeah, it happens AAAAAALL the time!) I think of your dad, because he usually greets me with a "Hello, Gorgeous!"

billy: I missed your call! Drat and phoo! But I have unlimited long-distance, finally, so look out.
